Amount of household goods
Volume is what counts. The number of rooms is only a rough guide – cellar, attic and large furniture all add up. Price guide for local moves: 2.5 rooms CHF 700–1,500, 4.5 rooms CHF 1,500–3,000.
Access at both addresses
Upper floors without a lift, long carrying distances, narrow stairwells or no parking increase the work involved. On upper floors, an external furniture lift can save time and money.
Distance and billing
Local moves are charged by the hour or as a lump sum – a crew of two with a van costs around CHF 150–250 per hour as a price guide. Longer distances add travel time.
Additional services
Packing, dismantling and reassembling furniture, disposal and end-of-tenancy cleaning are convenient but cost extra. A combined quote for moving and cleaning is often cheaper.
Timing
Around the official moving dates and at the end of each month, removal companies are very busy. Mid-week and mid-month moves are usually cheaper.

Good to know when moving in Switzerland
Parking permit
On public roads, the removal van often needs a permit for a temporary no-parking zone. Apply early to your municipality or the city police – many removal companies take care of this for you.
Registering your new address
After moving, you register with your new municipality, usually within 14 days. In many cantons you can do this online via eUmzugCH.
Insurance
Ask whether transport damage is insured and up to what amount – and whether this also covers items you packed yourself.
What does a removal company do?
A removal company moves your household goods and furniture from your old home to your new one: it provides the van and crew, carries, loads and secures your belongings and, if you wish, dismantles and reassembles furniture. Many companies also offer packing materials, packing and unpacking, temporary storage, disposal and end-of-tenancy cleaning with handover guarantee.
When is the job worth it?
From around three rooms, for upper floors without a lift or for distances over 30 km, hiring a company is almost always worth it. Request quotes four to six weeks before your moving date – earlier around the official moving dates at the end of March and the end of September.
What to look for when choosing Moving
- A quote based on an on-site visit or a video walkthrough, stating the volume in m³, the number of movers and the hours rather than just a lump sum.
- Transport insurance: have the sum insured and the excess per claim confirmed in writing.
- Clear terms for waiting time, parking permits, external furniture lift and extra hours.
